When opening up a DVD there is usually a copy right protection warning. This is to ensure that the DVD you have purchased, is not in fact a pirate copy. There are many different functions on a DVD, for example; storing information in digital form, menu options, animations
A DVD can hold up to 4.7gb of data per layer. DVDs nowadays are commonly used to either store specific files onto the hardware for example; movies, where they may later want to recollect these files or just to store pictures or music to keep as memories for example; a wedding or childhood memories. DVDs may not have such a big future as there has been a lot of competition and upgrade in the market where DVDs are loosing their value. Some of the threats to DVDs are downloading and streaming. These are both ways of receiving things such as music or films, for free. Therefore, it has become more popular that people are more interested in downloading than purchasing a DVD. Blu-ray players are now being installed as standard in our consoles & computers making it another threat to DVDs. The surprising factor is that DVD's are cheap to process so film companies often give a free DVD version of a movie with Blu-ray purchases. This will ensure DVDs still have relevance. There's now new innovative technology that allows you to stream movies from the web & watch straight away making it the fastest way to watch movies on demand for example 'Netflix' 'Love-film'. Even though the new streaming of movies is simple DVDs has the strength of memory, film fans will always buy movies they're interested in & want to see how it's made or even alternate scenes that streaming services don't offer.

I still think that DVDs are unique as when the DVD was first introduced, the advantage of the DVD was its memory capacity compared to the cassette. Video cassettes only holding 90 minutes of specific recorded footage. DVD's however are able to hold 4.7GB of digital memory the equivalent to 5 movies on total. This extra memory left great advantages for example more footage about behind the scene on how the film was made, interviews & commentaries. The extra memory also gave you the option to watch movies in other languages & subtitles.
